The Yellow Springs Center for the Arts Steering Committee is compiling information on the history of the arts in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Our village has had an unusually large number of people involved in the arts going back to the mid 19th century. It is not just the well known activities in the performing arts like the Antioch Shakespeare Festival from the 1950s, but also visual artists like Robert Metcalfe, Gilbert Wilson, Robert Whitmore, Axel Bahnsen, musicians like Walter Anderson, Shirley Mullins, Harry Partsch, and others in a list that is very long.

Much of the impetus for the arts here came out of the theatre, music and art departments at Antioch College, and it is evident that the arts continue to thrive in Yellow Springs. This can be seen in the current popularity of "Summer in the Springs", the "Art Walks", the sculpture contest, the many musical events such as Chamber Music Yellow Springs, the Blues Festival, the High School's music and theatre programs, Y.S. Kids Playhouse, and the popular live music performances in local bars, Street Fairs, and other venues.

The proposed construction of the Center for the Arts at the corner of Railroad and Dayton Streets will draw all these forms of the arts together. As part of this project the Steering Committee is asking people with knowledge or involvement in the various arts in Yellow Springs to enter their reminiscences in this wiki under the appropriate heading.
